A welcome ceremony for new Belgians at the town hall
On April 1, 2022, after living in Belgium for ten years, artist Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert was finally able to write this sentence:
“I declare that I wish to become a Belgian citizen and that I will abide by the Constitution, the laws of the Belgian people, and the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.”
After a long and difficult process to become Belgian, that was it. No ceremony, no party. No ritual to mark the transition to a new nationality.
Anyuta's story is the story of many people.
The administrative process of becoming Belgian is emotionally draining, and when you finally do become Belgian, there is no one there to welcome you.
This is not only unfortunate for the new Belgians, but also a missed opportunity for the old ones. Because welcoming others is just as important as being welcomed yourself.
That is why Anyuta created a ceremony:
- A ceremony at the town hall to welcome new Belgians.
- A ceremony where old Belgians can say “Welcome!”
Because we may have different backgrounds, but there is also something essential that we share: our future.
A welcome ceremony is the perfect way to acknowledge and celebrate this.
